Three trends of the Chinese internet

During the times of Covid-19, the internet is becoming increasingly important for companies. According to Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma, it is evolving from a tool that makes their life easier to an absolute key tool that companies must develop well if they are planning to survive. Currently, there are three main trends for the internet in China (according to the SCMP China Internet Report 2020):

Trend 1, Covid-19

  • People now spend more time on the internet.
  • Activities for several apps have surged, for example, work productivity apps (+308 Mio users), short-form video apps (+123 Mio users), educational apps (+79 Mio users).
  • Cutting edge technologies have been developed to help combat the virus.

Trend 2, 2020, the year of mass adoption for 5G

  • 160 Mio 5G subscribers are expected by the end of year.
  • Massive investment into 5G infrastructure, with 5G even available on the peak of Mount Everest.
  • Many new moderately-priced 5G smartphones pop up.

Trend 3, live streaming enters third phase:

  • Live streaming evolved from its beginnings in gaming, sports and teen culture to a popular tool for promoting fast-selling products and further to a sales tool for traditional industries.
